Academic Life at PCS

Mission Statement : Partners in Reaching the Heart, Teaching the Mind

Academic Life at Pacific Christian School is rigorous, focusing on intellectual development, cognition, and higher-level thinking skills.

BJU Press, a Christian Publisher, provides textbooks, workbooks, and other curricular material for nearly every subject taught in each grade level.  Embedded with a Christian Worldview perspective, BJU Press through inductive reasoning challenges students to think beyond the obvious.  Through a Biblical lens students can understand the world God created through Science, History, Mathematics and Language.

At PCS students learn to read as early as kindergarten, being taught phonemic awareness, site words, word attack skills and more. Our Accelerated Reader program gives baseline Lexile levels to all students and through our Library/Media Center students can check out appropriate-level reading books and assess their comprehension.  Benchmark goals are set for every student during the year.  Many students improve one to two grade levels over a ten-month period.

Mathematically, students at PCS have an opportunity to complete Geometry before they graduate from eighth grade.  Starting in first grade students receive grade level math instruction and with the help of Moby Max are able to accelerate toward grade level standards and beyond.  Students’ achievement is tracked with baseline scores every fall and benchmark testing every quarter.  Again, we see many students improve one to two grade levels over a ten-month period.

Homework at PCS is moderate.  As a rule, homework should not exceed 10 minutes for every grade level the child is in.  For example, we strive to keep homework for third graders at 30 minutes, fourth graders at 40 minutes, etc. Research has demonstrated repeatedly that increased homework times do not lead to increased achievement.  Homework is good for developing good study habits, discipline, and reinforcement.

Co-curricular activities that support academic life are Robotics, Spelling Bee, Speech Meet, Science Fair, Math Olympics, Million Word Club, Walk-thru Program, California History Day, and more.
