AB 500 Notification to Parents
We want parents to be aware of our policies regarding staff member and student interactions for:
Elemenary
All staff are forbidden from using corporal punishment, which is defined as the use of negative physical touching. Some examples are spanking, slapping, tapping, pulling ears, arms or hair, pinching, lifting by one arm against any child's will if for a punative reason. This list is not all-inclusive. Any infraction of this requirement will result in the immediate firing of the staff member using the punishment. In addition, staff are also required not to use any child handling technique which results in unusual punishment, infliction of pain, humiliation, intimidation, ridicule, coercion, threat, mental abuse or other action of a punative nature, including but not limited to: interference with the daily living functions, including earting, sleeping, or toileting; or withholding of shelter, clothing, medication or aids to physical functioning.
Elemenary
- Corporal punishment shall not be administered to students by PCS staff.
- A teacher should never be alone with a student in a classroom if at all possible. Preferably there should be another adult present and/or at least another student in the room when helping a student with homework, etc.
- The window blinds should remain open throughout the day and the doors should be open (when the class and/or teacher is present) as weather and noise permit.
- Touching students should only be done in a public setting. Putting one arm around a student's shoulder for encouragement or a pat on the back is considered appropriate touching. Touching should always be above the waist. A full embrace or kissing a student is not appropriate touching. Students should never sit on a teacher's lap.
